The city was originally names DIsston City in 1884 when Hamilton Disston pruchased the tract . Later it changed it's name to Bonafacio and then in 1890 it was changed again to Veteran City due to the large number of war veterans who had retired there. Finally Gulfport assumed her true identity in 1910 when she changed her name to Gulfport once and for all.

Gulfport neighborhoods are among the most historic in Florida and there are many arts and crafts style bungalows and small cottages for sale and rent in the area. Many of the streets are brick like it's neighboring St. Petersburg. Real estate values are great right now in Gulfport with values being among the best around. There are many homes and condos available for purchase and the city is a great place to live and work. The waterfront district is dotted with shops and restaurants for the residents to enjoy and it is truly a live work type area where merchants run their business right in the neighborhood in whoch they reside. Beach Blvd has over a dozen restaurants that are locally owned and operated and have a loyal following of folks from Gulfport as well as the surrounding communities of St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach.

On Tuesdays the city hosts a Fresh Market in the Waterfront District that is very well attended from 9AM until 3PM. There you will find fresh groceries and produce, cheese, plants, crafts and baked goods.
